Dr David Iser is a Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist who consults broadly on disorders of the liver and gut. He is skilled in Endoscopy (Gastroscopy & Colonoscopy), PillCam and FibroScan.

Dr Iser holds dual public hospital appointments in Melbourne at St Vincent’s Hospital and The Alfred and travels to Bairnsdale Hospital monthly. He also consults with and offers continuing care to remotely located patients requiring special access via the Telehealth program.

Dr Iser graduated from the University of Melbourne with Honours in Medicine and a Bachelor of Medical Science in 1997. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians with Advanced Training in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy. Dr Iser elected for a year of Intensive Care and Infectious Diseases training as part of his FRACP training program. He combined his interest in Infectious Diseases and Hepatology in his PhD, studied in concert with three centres of excellence in Melbourne under the supervision of: Professor Sharon Lewin, during her term as Head, Department of Infectious Diseases, The Alfred Hospital and Monash University and Co-head, Centre for Biomedical Research, Burnet Institute; Professor Stephen Locarnini, Head of Research & Molecular Development at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL); and, Associate Professor Paul Desmond, during his term as Director of the Department of Gastroenterology at St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. David’s investigation focused on the factors leading to liver disease in HIV-hepatitis B viral co-infection.

In his research Dr Iser has collaborated with colleagues at many other institutions including Monash Medical Centre, the Pathology Department at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Erasmus Rotterdam University Medical Centre in the Netherlands and Department of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Dr Iser has been involved in a number of significant clinical trials including PHOTON-2, a study of sofosbuvir in HIV-HCV co-infection, published in The Lancet in 2015. He is currently involved in clinical trials including a study of grazoprevir/ elbasvir for people with HCV who take opiate substitution therapy (C-EDGE-OST), the Australian Trial of Acute Hepatitis C (ATAHC-2), the Treatment as Prevention (TAP) Study and a study comparing different models of care for treating people with HCV (the PRIME Study).

Through his research, Dr Iser is regularly invited to present at national and international meetings. In recent years Dr Iser has presented in Cairns, Xi An (China), Copenhagen, Madrid and Vancouver. He is a regular reviewer for many journals including Antiviral Therapy, The Lancet, Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Journal of Medical Virology and Liver International. Dr Iser’s specialist procedural work in liver disease includes non-invasive assessments using FibroScan and Shear Wave Elastography (SuperSonic) technologies. Dr Iser’s specialist procedural work in gut and colon assessment includes colonoscopy, gastroscopy and PillCam technology.

Dr Iser is an advocate of excellent universal healthcare and a career highlight has been investigation of the link between kidney disease, diabetes and other cardiovascular risk factors in Aboriginal Australians living in Northern Territory and Far North Queensland as part of his BMedSc.

Dr Iser is a lifelong student and teacher of medicine. He is committed to improving healthcare by collaborating and sharing knowledge with other medical specialists and all health care professionals, notably pharmacists, nurses and medical students. Dr Iser considers it a privilege to provide healthcare to his patients.
